You've left the Fort on a westerly heading and the men are hardened to the task. It isn't long until you are swallowed up by the boreal forests, the swaying grasses and rolling hills that have replaced the rampart walls of the Hudson's Bay Company's Fort Edmonton. Although the men of the brigade have travelled this route before, it's all new to you. You're lost to the call of the wild, you are given over to Canada. After enduring many a hardship, the road less travelled crests a ridge line to reveal a distant wonder and suddenly all of the suffering to get here seems a distant memory. There they are. Two centuries have passed since David Thompson and the fur brigades first crossed the Athabasca Pass in what is now Jasper National Park and while the trip today may be far less arduous, the emotions remain unchanged. You are quietened by the vigilant peaks that watch the crisp streams cascading down their shoulders to eventually merge with the mighty rivers washing their feet. The sight of a bear lumbering into the forest speaks to you of the creatures that have searched these valleys long before Thompson's arrival, and here and there are the silent reminders of another people, the first people, the ones who came before........
