Ultimate Jasper Dark Sky Experience

Join astronomy experts at The Jasper Planetarium for a full evening exploring Jasper Dark Sky Preserve – the world’s largest accessible astronomy park – NIGHTLY starting inside our world-exclusive domed theatre.  THEN outside with the largest telescope in the Rockies
 
First, join our astronomy experts in our 50-seat dome theatre for a LIVE virtual tour the world’s largest accessible dark sky preserve.  Inside the planetarium, your guide will share local aboriginal constellations, views of the Northern Lights from Jasper, and take you into space orbiting above the Rockies and on to the edge of the universe…all in about 40 minutes.
 
 
(Then, come outside for an all-weather telescope experience** where you will:
 
  • Tour of the largest, most powerful telescopes in the Rockies
  • See recent 4K Jasper sky imagery from our new video telescope
  • Get tips on have the chance to see a meteor or even the Northern Lights

If weather permits, you’ll also enjoy a live guided tour of objects in our Solar System and deep space as seen through our telescopes.  Nearly ALL nights eventually clear up enough for telescope viewing.

** NOTE: The Telescope Experience is a learning opportunity with weather permitting views of the sky. This experience occurs next to the Marmot Lodge parking lot, where we are able to tuWhile we do not need the sky to be completely clear to use our telescopes we CAN NOT guarantee clear skies. We DO NOT provide refunds if the skies are too cloudy, but will offer a “rain check” to re-book for another date in addition to proceeding with the other aspects of our telescope experience.
Please note also that evenings at or near the full moon will reduce visibility of faint deep space objects – this has nothing to do with the weather or darkness of our observing location
 
Our location next to the Marmot Lodge parking lot – with a minimum of light pollution on the edge of town – offers the ideal mix of convenience and great views of stars, planets, galaxies and more. This is an outdoor activity so dress warm!

Join our LIVE astronomy experts inside for a fun, funny, inspirational, audience-participation tour exploring Jasper Dark Sky Preserve – the world’s largest accessible astronomy park…Every evening in our world-exclusive 50-seat domed theatre experience (also available, tour outside with the largest telescope in the Rockies as an additional experience

Inside the planetarium, your guide will share:

  • local aboriginal constellations
  • views of the Northern Lights from Jasper
  • and take you into space orbiting above the Rockies…
  • and on to the edge of the universe…all in about 35-40 minutes
  • there will be lots of audience-participation, so be sure to ask lots of questions or maybe try a hands-on activity!

Other Experiences:
Every week in the summer and fall, we offer extra-special trips that take you beyond the planetarium and our dome-side telescope observing area.  These excursions allow those who want to go farther into our dark sky preserve the chance to see the darkest skies and brightest views of objects in space, a comfortable 10-minute trip outside the town of Jasper.

Wild-Sky Wednesdays
(Wednesdays – 10 pm in summer, starting July 3 / 9 pm starting Sept 18)
 
 
Join astronomy experts from The Jasper Planetarium for an out-of-this-world Rocky Mountain evening experience:
 
-includes our world-exclusive dome theatre experience with a LIVE astronomy expert
-then, travel to a specially-selected site in the world’s largest accessible dark sky preserve
-laser-guided tour of naked-eye constellations and planets (if visible)
– “learn together” with binoculars we supply and look at our Milky Way and deep space objects for yourself
-get tips on how to use your DSLR camera to photograph auroras and the Milky Way
-if weather permits, you’ll also enjoy a guided tour of live objects in space as seen through our telescopes

 
Duration: up to 3 hours (come-and-go as-you-like)
Minimum age: 4

Join space author Peter McMahon and astronomy experts from The Jasper Planetarium for an out-of-this-world Rocky Mountain evening experience:
 
-includes the world-exclusive dome theatre experience with a LIVE astronomy expert
-travel to a specially-selected site in the world’s largest accessible dark sky preserve
-telescope experience under extra-dark skies: tour the largest, most powerful telescopes in the Rockies
-see recent 4K Jasper sky imagery from our new video telescope

* light refreshments included (usually hot chocolate and Tim Bits – the “official” snack of Canadian astronomers)

Sky Tram Star Sessions 
(Saturdays in Sept Fridays & Saturdays in Oct)
 
Blast off with astronomy experts from The Jasper Planetarium for an exclusive dining and stargazing experience atop the Jasper Skytram.
Your SkyTram flight will take you nearly 1 km closer to the stars above, to the Skytram Upper Station, where you’ll have the chance to look through the most powerful telescopes in the Canadian Rockies, under the darkest skies in the Rockies.
 
Join us for a guided tour of the Solar System, learning about planets, galaxies, and constellations, and if you’re lucky, you
might even see a meteor or the Northern Lights!
You’ll also have a chance to attend a special talk on Canada’s dark skies or a quick workshop about how to photograph objects in the night sky with your DSLR camera.
