Jasper Dark Sky Experience (DAILY:  May 1 – Oct 27)

Join astronomy experts at The Jasper Planetarium for a full evening exploring Jasper Dark Sky Preserve – the world’s largest accessible astronomy park – NIGHTLY starting inside our world-exclusive domed theatre.  THEN outside with the largest telescope in the Rockies
 
First, join our local astronomy guides in our 40-seat dome theatre for a LIVE virtual tour the world’s largest accessible dark sky preserve.  Inside the planetarium, your guide will share local aboriginal constellations, views of the Northern Lights from Jasper, and take you into space orbiting above the Rockies and on to the edge of the universe…all in about 40 minutes.
 
(Then, come outside for an all-weather telescope experience** where you will:
  • Tour of the largest, most powerful telescopes in the Rockies
  • See recent 4K Jasper sky imagery from our new video telescope
  • Get tips on have the chance to see a meteor or even the Northern Lights
  • if skies aren’t clear during your tour, we also offer a complimentary ‘rain-check’ to come back again for any of our daily evening or afternoon telescope sessions, at no additional charge

If weather permits, you’ll also enjoy a live guided tour of objects in our Solar System and deep space as seen through our telescopes.

For the 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm afternoon version of this activity, weather-permitting views through the telescopes might include giant 100-Earth-big flames on the Sun, details on the Moon, daytime views of bright planets such as Venus, and close-up glimpses of some of the most breathtaking summits of the surrounding mountains.
 
For the 10 pm evening version of this activity, weather-permitting views through the telescopes might include evening planets, stars, galaxies, nebulas (clouds of colourful gas) and maybe even a meteor or the Northern Lights!

Every week in the summer and fall, we offer extra-special trips that take you beyond the planetarium and our dome-side telescope observing area.  These excursions allow those who want to go farther into our dark sky preserve the chance to see the darkest skies and brightest views of objects in space, a comfortable 10-minute trip outside the town of Jasper.

Wild Sky Wednesdays / Far-Out Fridays
At Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge (meet/check-in at our desk in the Main Lodge), then drive together to stargazing location
 
NOTE: This tour requires a minimum of 10 participants to run. If this number is not met before start-time, participants will join the rest of our Planetarium / Telescope COMBO guests for the evening and be refunded the difference in price.
 
Join astronomy experts from The Jasper Planetarium for an out-of-this-world Rocky Mountain evening experience:
 
-includes our world-exclusive dome theatre experience with a LIVE astronomy expert AND our Telescope Experience
-after participating in the first part of our Planetarium & Telescope Experiences, follow your dark sky guide (who will make an announcement) to travel to a specially-selected site in the world’s largest accessible dark sky preserve

-“learn together” with binoculars we supply and look at our Milky Way and deep space objects for yourself
-get tips on how to use your DSLR camera to photograph auroras and the Milky Way

Skytram Star Sessions
Saturdays in September / Fridays & Saturdays in October, blast off for an astronomy adventure 1 km closer to space.  The Jasper Skytram and Jasper Planetarium offer a full evening of cosmic exploration under the darkest skies in the mountains, through the most powerful telescopes in the mountains, on top of a mountain. 
This incredible package includes: Skytram cable car flight to the top of Whistlers Mountain, telescope experience atop the mountain, and a 3-course dinner to start your evening off.

NOTE: All of our Telescope and Binocular Experiences are a learning opportunity with many outdoor activities that are not weather-dependent and weather-permitting views of the sky. While we DO NOT need the sky to be completely clear to use our telescopes and/or binocolars, we CAN NOT guarantee clear skies. We DO NOT provide refunds if skies are too cloudy to observe with our telescopes and/or binocolars, BUT can offer a “rain check” to re-book for another date if-desired. 
** NOTE: The Telescope Experience is a learning opportunity with weather permitting views of the sky. This experience occurs next to the Marmot Lodge parking lot, where we are able to tuWhile we do not need the sky to be completely clear to use our telescopes we CAN NOT guarantee clear skies. We DO NOT provide refunds if the skies are too cloudy, but will offer a “rain check” to re-book for another date in addition to proceeding with the other aspects of our telescope experience.
Please note also that evenings at or near the full moon will reduce visibility of faint deep space objects – this has nothing to do with the weather or darkness of our observing location
